Nigeria Union Of Teachers Stages Solidarity Rally In Ikeja

Members of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) on Tuesday staged a solidarity rally in Ikeja, Lagos State, over the recent kidnapping of school children and teachers in Oyo State.

The protesters, who marched through major roads in the state capital, called on security agencies and relevant authorities to intensify efforts toward rescuing the abducted victims and improving security around schools across the country.

Videos circulating online showed a large number of teachers dressed in union attire carrying placards with different inscriptions demanding urgent government action against insecurity in schools.

Some of the placards displayed messages such as, “End the religion of fear in our schools,” “Let teachers teach in peace,” and “Protect Nigerian students and teachers now.”

The rally caused noticeable attention around parts of Ikeja as motorists, traders, and residents watched the demonstrators chant solidarity songs and call for safer learning environments nationwide.

The union members expressed concern over the increasing cases of abduction involving students and teachers, warning that insecurity in educational institutions could discourage learning and negatively affect the nation’s education sector.

According to some protesters, many teachers now live in fear, especially those posted to rural communities and isolated areas where security presence is weak.

Speaking during the rally, some union officials stressed that teachers should not be forced to risk their lives simply for carrying out their professional duties.

They noted that schools ought to be safe spaces for both learners and educators, adding that repeated attacks on educational institutions continue to threaten the future of many Nigerian children.

The protest follows widespread outrage over the recent abduction incident in Oyo State involving school children and teachers.

Although details surrounding the attack remain sketchy, the development has once again renewed concerns over insecurity and the vulnerability of schools in different parts of the country.

In recent years, Nigeria has witnessed several cases of mass abductions targeting schools, particularly in northern states, with criminal groups often attacking educational institutions and demanding ransom payments.

The incidents have forced some schools to shut down temporarily, while parents continue to express fears about the safety of their children.

Tuesday’s demonstration by the NUT also reflected growing frustration among education stakeholders over what many describe as inadequate protection for schools and teachers.

Some of the protesters urged both federal and state governments to deploy more security personnel around schools and introduce stronger policies aimed at preventing attacks on educational institutions.

Others called for improved intelligence gathering and quicker response mechanisms whenever security threats are reported in school communities.

The union maintained that teachers across Nigeria remain committed to educating children despite difficult working conditions and security challenges.

However, they warned that the continued exposure of teachers and students to violent attacks could worsen the already existing crisis in the education sector.

Several Nigerians who reacted to the protest on social media also called on authorities to treat the issue with urgency.

Many users described the recurring attacks on schools as heartbreaking, insisting that children should never have to learn under fear or uncertainty.

Others commended the teachers’ union for organizing the solidarity rally, noting that the protest sends a strong message about the urgent need to prioritize education security in the country.

The latest development comes amid increasing calls from civil society groups, parents, and education advocates demanding immediate rescue efforts for the abducted victims in Oyo State.

As of the time of filing this report, authorities were yet to officially provide fresh updates regarding the rescue operation or the condition of the kidnapped teachers and students.

Meanwhile, the NUT has vowed to continue pushing for safer schools and improved protection for teachers nationwide, insisting that quality education can only thrive in an atmosphere of peace and security.
