Nigeria Leads Global Petrol Price Surge Amid Middle East Conflict

Nigeria has recorded the sharpest increase in petrol pump prices worldwide following the escalation of conflict in the Middle East, according to a new analysis of data from Global Petrol Prices.

The report, first highlighted by TheCable, reveals that Nigeria saw a staggering 39.5% increase in the cost of petrol between February 23 and March 16. This surge significantly outpaces other nations, with Laos recording a 32.9% rise, followed by Australia and Vietnam at 31.8% each. In stark contrast, countries like South Africa and Mexico saw marginal increases of just 1.0% and 0.5%, respectively.

Global Market Disruption

The ongoing war in the Middle East has triggered the largest supply disruption in the history of the global oil market. Consequently, international oil prices have climbed to four-year highs, directly driving up the cost of fuel at Nigerian pumps.

While many expected local refining and domestic production to provide a buffer against global shocks, the reality has proven otherwise. On March 9, the Dangote Refinery clarified that it is not insulated from global market trends, as it must source its crude based on international benchmarks. Following this, the refinery increased its ex-gantry price to N1,175 per litre on March 13.

Domestic Price Volatility

As of today, Nigerian consumers are navigating a volatile retail landscape where prices fluctuate based on location and the specific marketer:

  • NNPC Retail Outlets: Prices are currently approximately N1,130 in Lagos and as high as N1,261 in some Abuja locations.

  • Major Marketers: In Abuja and surrounding areas, prices range between N1,267 and N1,330 per litre.

  • Independent Marketers: Prices in some regions have climbed as high as N1,350 per litre.

Despite the variations, the overall trend confirms that Nigeria is feeling the brunt of global energy instability more acutely than any other nation analyzed in the report.
