LP Holds Peaceful Primaries In Anambra, Unveils Senate, Reps Candidates For 2027 Polls

The Labour Party in Anambra State has concluded its primary elections ahead of the 2027 general elections, producing candidates for the Senate and House of Representatives positions across various constituencies in the state.

The exercise, which was conducted using the Option A4 voting system, was described by party leaders as peaceful, transparent and in line with democratic principles guiding the party’s internal electoral process.

The Chairman of the Labour Party in Anambra State, Peter Okoye, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists in Awka on Thursday.

According to Okoye, the primary election witnessed strong participation from party members, delegates, aspirants and stakeholders from different parts of the state.

He explained that the conduct of the exercise reflected the Labour Party’s commitment to internal democracy, fairness and grassroots participation.

Okoye further assured all candidates who emerged from the exercise that the leadership and members of the party would work collectively to secure victory for them during the 2027 general elections.

He noted that the candidates were duly ratified and affirmed during a special nomination congress conducted in accordance with the Constitution of the Labour Party, the Electoral Act 2026 and the Labour Party Electoral Guidelines 2026.

“We expressed joy that the exercise was peaceful and transparent and reflected the party’s commitment to internal democracy and grassroots participation,” Okoye said.

“The exercise was conducted through the ‘Option A4’ voting system, and it witnessed strong participation by our members, delegates, aspirants and stakeholders.

“We assure our candidates that the leadership and members of the party will work hard to secure victory for all of them during the 2027 general elections.”

The Option A4 voting system, which involves delegates openly queuing behind the aspirant of their choice, has often been promoted by political observers as a transparent method capable of reducing manipulation and electoral disputes during party primaries.

Party officials stated that the exercise was conducted peacefully without reports of violence or major disagreements among party members.

Those who emerged as candidates during the primaries include Venerable Tochukwu Ikezue for Anambra Central Senatorial District; Chief Ikenna Okafor for Nnewi North, Nnewi South and Ekwusigo Federal Constituency; Mrs Ifeoma Obiokoye for Anaocha, Dunukofia and Njikoka Federal Constituency; and Ujunwa Onyekachi for Awka North and South Federal Constituency.

Declaring the candidates winners, the Chairman of the Electoral Committee and Returning Officer for the primaries, Mr Iduma-Christian Mayor, stated that the aspirants contested the election as sole candidates in their respective constituencies.

He explained that the process complied fully with the party’s electoral guidelines and other legal provisions governing political party primaries in Nigeria.

According to him, the successful conduct of the exercise demonstrates the party’s readiness to participate actively in the 2027 general elections.

The Independent National Electoral Commission was also present to monitor the exercise, in line with constitutional provisions requiring INEC oversight during party primaries and nomination congresses.

Political observers say the successful completion of the primaries may strengthen the Labour Party’s preparations for the 2027 elections in Anambra State, where the party continues to enjoy considerable support among youths and urban voters.

Speaking after emerging as the candidate for Anambra Central Senatorial District, Venerable Tochukwu Ikezue thanked party members and INEC officials for ensuring a credible process.

He pledged to focus on tackling environmental and developmental challenges affecting communities within the senatorial district if elected in the 2027 general elections.

According to him, one of his major priorities would be addressing the severe erosion menace affecting several communities across Anambra Central.

Erosion has remained one of the biggest environmental challenges confronting many parts of Anambra State, destroying roads, homes and farmlands while displacing residents in affected communities.

Ikezue also promised to promote empowerment programmes for youths and women, improve community development and ensure inclusive leadership that accommodates all groups within the constituency.

“If elected, I will focus on tackling the erosion menace ravaging our senatorial district, empowering our people and ensuring accessible and inclusive leadership,” he said.

The Labour Party has continued efforts to consolidate its political structure across different states following its growing popularity during previous election cycles.

Analysts believe the party’s performance in the 2027 elections will largely depend on its ability to maintain internal unity, strengthen grassroots mobilization and present credible candidates capable of attracting voters.

In Anambra State particularly, political competition ahead of the 2027 elections is expected to intensify as major parties continue consultations, alliances and internal restructuring.

The conclusion of the Labour Party primaries now sets the stage for increased political campaigns and mobilization activities ahead of the next general elections.

Party leaders expressed optimism that the peaceful conduct of the exercise would further boost public confidence in the party’s democratic process and electoral readiness.
