“There Will Always Be Winners And Losers” – Peter Obi Appeals For Unity After NDC Primaries
The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has appealed to aggrieved aspirants within the party to accept the outcome of the recently concluded primary elections in good faith and work together for the growth of the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi made the appeal during the second National Executive Committee meeting of the NDC held in Abuja, where party leaders, stakeholders and members gathered to deliberate on the future direction of the political organization.
The former governor of Anambra State urged party members to set aside grievances arising from the primaries and focus on building a strong and credible political platform capable of addressing Nigeria’s numerous socio-economic and political challenges.
Speaking before party executives, lawmakers, state chairmen and other stakeholders, Obi acknowledged the sacrifices and commitment of members who participated in the party’s activities since its formation.
He also apologized for the delayed commencement of the NEC meeting, attributing it to logistical and organizational challenges.
The former presidential candidate described the Nigeria Democratic Congress as a young but rapidly growing political movement that had achieved remarkable milestones within a relatively short period.
According to him, the party successfully organized congresses, conventions and primary elections within approximately 90 days, a feat he described as evidence of the determination and commitment of party members nationwide.
“I want to sincerely appeal to all our aspirants who participated in the primaries to accept the outcomes in good faith,” Obi said.
“In every democratic process, there will be winners and there will be those who do not succeed. What matters is what we do after the process.”
He stressed that internal democracy remains one of the pillars of a successful political system, adding that disagreements and competition are natural aspects of democratic politics.
However, Obi warned that prolonged divisions and unresolved grievances could weaken the party’s chances of presenting a united front ahead of future elections.
He urged members to place the collective interest of the party and the country above personal ambitions and political disappointments.
According to him, Nigeria is currently facing enormous economic, security and governance challenges that require committed and visionary leadership.
The former Anambra governor stated that the NDC was established to provide Nigerians with a credible alternative capable of delivering responsible governance, economic growth and national unity.
He further urged party leaders at all levels to intensify efforts toward reconciliation and grassroots mobilization in preparation for the 2027 elections.
Obi noted that the strength of any political party lies not only in electoral victories but also in its ability to remain united during difficult moments.
“We must continue to build a party founded on justice, fairness, accountability and service to the Nigerian people. The task ahead is bigger than individual interests,” he added.
Political observers believe Obi’s appeal may be aimed at preventing internal crises and defections that often emerge after party primaries in Nigeria.
In recent years, disagreements arising from primary elections have contributed to divisions within major political parties, leading to legal battles, defections and weakened electoral performances.
Analysts say maintaining unity among aspirants and stakeholders will be critical for emerging political platforms seeking to challenge established parties in future elections.
During the NEC meeting, several party leaders reportedly commended members for their resilience and participation in the party-building process despite political and financial challenges.
Some stakeholders also called for stronger internal structures, improved communication and greater youth involvement as the party prepares for future political contests.
Obi reiterated that the focus of the NDC should remain on offering practical solutions to issues affecting ordinary Nigerians, including insecurity, unemployment, inflation and poor infrastructure.
He urged members to remain committed to the party’s vision and avoid actions capable of undermining its credibility or weakening public confidence.
The former governor also expressed optimism that the NDC could emerge as a formidable political force if members remained disciplined, united and focused on national development.
He stressed that political leadership should not be driven solely by personal ambition but by the desire to improve the welfare of citizens and strengthen democratic institutions.
As preparations gradually begin for the 2027 general elections, political parties across the country are expected to intensify consultations, coalition talks and internal restructuring aimed at positioning themselves for future electoral contests.
Observers believe that how emerging parties manage internal disputes and reconcile aggrieved aspirants may significantly influence their political fortunes in the coming years.
For the NDC, Obi’s latest appeal appears to signal an early attempt to consolidate party unity and strengthen its internal democratic process as it seeks to expand its political influence nationwide.
