BTS Smashes Records: New Album ‘ARIRANG’ Sells 4 Million Copies on Day One

K-pop global icons BTS have made a historic return to the music scene, with their new album ARIRANGselling a staggering 3.98 million copies within the first 24 hours of its release on Friday.

The figures, confirmed by Big Hit Music and local tracker Hanteo Chart, shatter the group’s previous first-week record of 3.37 million copies set in 2020. The lead single, “Swim,” has already dominated iTunes charts in 90 countries, including the U.S., UK, and Japan.

‘BTSnomics’ and the Global Comeback

The album launch comes just ahead of a massive free comeback concert at Seoul’s Gwanghwamun Square on Saturday, March 21. Authorities expect up to 260,000 fans to descend on central Seoul for the event, which is being livestreamed globally on Netflix.

Experts suggest the group’s return after a nearly four-year hiatus could trigger a financial phenomenon dubbed “BTSnomics.” Analysts at IBK Investment & Securities estimate that the upcoming 82-date “Arirang World Tour” could generate at least 2.9 trillion won ($2 billion) in ticket and merchandise sales, potentially surpassing the economic impact of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour.

A ‘K-Everything’ Wave

The group’s impact extends far beyond music, fueling a surge in South Korean tourism and retail:

  • Tourism: Overseas searches for Seoul and Busan spiked by 160% and 2,400% respectively following the tour announcement.

  • Retail: Sales of BTS-themed merchandise, ranging from toothbrushes to beauty devices, rose by 430% this week alone.

  • Cultural Context: The comeback follows the recent success of Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters, which won two Oscars—including Best Animated Feature—on March 16, further solidifying the global “K-wave.”

Safety and Logistics

In anticipation of the massive crowds, the Seoul government has implemented a full-day shutdown of the Gwanghwamun district, deploying over 8,000 personnel for security and crowd control. Despite an ankle injury that will partially limit leader RM’s performance, the group is set to take the stage at 8:00 p.m. KST to kick off their 2026-2027 world tour.
