Labour Party Schedules Presidential Primary, National Convention for April 28
The Labour Party (LP) has officially fixed its National Convention and Presidential Primary for April 28, 2026. The event, which will take place at the International Conference Centre in Umuahia, Abia State, marks a critical milestone in the party’s preparation for the upcoming general elections.
The schedule was contained in a formal notification to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), signed by the Interim National Chairman of the Labour Party, Senator Nenadi Usman, and released to newsmen on Friday in Abuja.
Timeline of Elective Congresses
According to the approved timetable, the party will undergo a rapid four-day elective process across all levels of government:
-
Ward Congresses: Thursday, April 23
-
Local Government Area (LGA) Congresses: Friday, April 24
-
State Congresses: Saturday, April 25
-
National Convention/Presidential Primary: Tuesday, April 28
Compliance and Digital Registration
Senator Usman noted that the schedule is in strict compliance with Section 82(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, which mandates political parties to notify INEC of conventions and congresses.
The party explained that the current dates follow a previous postponement intended to ensure broader member participation. This window allowed for the completion of the party’s ongoing digital membership registration process, aimed at modernizing the party’s database and ensuring a transparent primary.
Call for Seamless Monitoring
The Interim Chairman urged INEC to mobilize its state offices to ensure effective and seamless monitoring of the congresses in line with statutory mandates. She reaffirmed the Labour Party’s commitment to fostering democratic development and transparent leadership in Nigeria.
