Electrical Spark Ignites Fire, Destroys Three Buildings in Kano

A devastating fire sparked by an electrical fault has razed three residential buildings in the Gaida area of Kumbotso Local Government Area, Kano State.

The incident occurred Tuesday morning at approximately 11:05 a.m. near the Fatima Bread landmark. The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the details in a statement released Wednesday by its Public Relations Officer, Saminu Abdullahi.

The Outbreak

The agency’s Emergency Response Unit moved into action following a distress call from a resident, Aminu Bello. Firefighters from the State Headquarters, Sharada, and Rijiyar Zaki stations were deployed to the scene to combat the inferno.

Upon arrival, officials discovered the fire originated at an electrical transformer site measuring approximately 50 by 50 feet. The flames quickly spread from the open transformer area to adjacent structures.

Extent of Damage

According to the Fire Service, the blaze severely impacted three specific properties:

  • Building 1: A ground-floor structure (30x25ft) consisting of a room, parlor, and toilet; completely destroyed.

  • Building 2: A one-storey building (30x30ft); the upper floor, containing a bedroom, kitchen, and toilet, was gutted.

  • Building 3: A second ground-floor structure (30x30ft) comprising two rooms and a toilet; also razed by the flames.

“The cause of the fire was identified as an electrical spark,” Abdullahi stated. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.

Safety Warning

The Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Sani Anas, urged the public to exercise extreme caution with electrical appliances and open flames.

“Members of the public are advised to avoid open flames in residential areas and ensure proper handling of electrical systems to prevent such tragedies,” Anas said.

Related Incidents

This outbreak follows a similar disaster last Friday at Owode Market in Offa, Kwara State, where six shops and goods worth millions of naira were destroyed. That fire was reportedly triggered by bush burning that spiraled out of control, highlighting a rising trend of fire incidents across the country.
