2027: INEC Records 3.4m New Voters in Ongoing Registration Drive
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has registered over 3.4 million new voters in the second phase of the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.
According to the commission’s Week 13 update released in Abuja on Wednesday, a total of 3,441,121 registrations were completed as of April 3, 2026. This figure includes 2,068,384 online pre-registrations and 1,372,737 physical walk-ins at designated centers.
State Rankings and Demographics
State-by-state data identifies Jigawa as the leader in new registrations with 201,047 (5.84%), followed closely by Lagos(181,095) and Kano (177,681).
The update highlights a significant surge in youth and female engagement:
-
Youth Dominance: Citizens aged 18–34 account for 2,354,768 registrants, representing over 68% of the total.
-
Gender Gap: Women outpaced men, accounting for 55.86% (1,922,143) of the new sign-ups.
-
Occupational Lead: Students form the largest voting bloc among new registrants at 35.92%, followed by business owners (20.40%) and farmers/fishers (18.28%).
Inclusion and Verification
The commission also reported that 48,330 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) successfully registered during this period.
INEC clarified that these figures remain provisional pending a rigorous data “clean-up” process. This will include a period for public claims and objections, followed by the deployment of the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) to eliminate duplicate entries.
FCT Suspension
Registration remains suspended in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in compliance with Section 9(6) of the Electoral Act 2022, following the Area Council Elections held on February 21.
INEC continues to urge eligible Nigerians to utilize its official portals to complete their registration ahead of upcoming deadlines.
