Abuja Building Collapse: Wike Orders Developer’s Arrest, Forfeits Land to FCT

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has ordered the immediate arrest of the developer and the permanent forfeiture of the land following the collapse of a multi-story hotel structure in the Jikwoyi area last Friday.

During an on-the-spot assessment of the site on Monday, the Minister revealed that the construction was entirely unauthorized and carried out in total defiance of regulatory authorities.

Defiance of “Stop Work” Notices

According to the Minister, the FCT Department of Development Control had repeatedly flagged the site for illegal activity. However, the developer allegedly ignored all warnings to persist with the project.

“Despite the lack of formal approval, the company proceeded with construction, leading to the eventual structural failure. There was no approval for the construction of this building,” Wike stated. “Development Control had issued stop-work notices, but the company ignored the notices and continued regardless.”

Seizure and Prosecution

While the collapse resulted in several injuries, no fatalities were recorded. The victims are currently receiving medical attention. Minister Wike warned that the situation could have been far more tragic and announced decisive punitive measures:

  • Land Reclamation: The FCT Administration (FCTA) will officially reclaim the plot for public use.

  • Criminal Prosecution: The developer and those behind the illegal construction will face legal action.

  • Community Consultation: The FCTA plans to consult Jikwoyi residents to determine a suitable public-purpose project for the reclaimed site.

A Warning to Illegal Developers

Wike underscored that the building approval process is a vital safety mechanism designed to monitor construction standards and material quality.

To prevent future disasters, the Minister mandated relevant agencies to escalate enforcement across the territory, including the demolition of all unapproved structures.

“It is important that we act decisively,” the Minister emphasized. “Where there is a clear violation, the law must take its course.”
