Aisha Yesufu Vows to Oppose Peter Obi Over One-Term Presidency Promise

Prominent activist and civil rights campaigner Aisha Yesufu has issued a stern warning to former presidential candidate Peter Obi, stating she will be his “fiercest opponent” should he renege on his pledge to serve only a single term if elected.

Speaking during a recent interview on Arise Television, Yesufu—a staunch supporter of the “Obidient” movement—emphasized that political leadership must be built on integrity and the sanctity of one’s word.

“I Will Fight Him With Everything”

Yesufu revealed that her support is contingent on Obi’s repeated commitment to a four-year transitional presidency.

“If Mr. Peter Obi gets into office and decides to do more than one term, I, Aisha Yesufu, said it here, I will oppose him with everything in me,” she declared. “He gave his word, and if he has given his word, he has to stick to his word.”

The activist noted that this was not a new development, clarifying that Obi’s stance on a single-term tenure predated the 2023 general elections.

The Integrity Test

Recounting a private conversation with the former Anambra State Governor, Yesufu disclosed that she sought personal clarification on the matter following the last election cycle to ensure the promise remained sacrosanct.

“I sat down with Mr. Peter Obi, and I said to him, ‘I need your word on this… Is it true? You’re going to do just one term?'” Yesufu recounted. According to her, Obi reaffirmed his position, citing his reputation as his bond. “He said, ‘Aisha, I told you even in 2023, and I still mean it… I don’t joke with my name. I don’t joke with my integrity.'”

A Single-Term Strategy

The concept of a single four-year term has become a focal point of Obi’s 2027 political strategy. Proponents suggest it could serve as a bridge to stabilize the country and rotate power more effectively, while critics have dismissed it as a “political gimmick.”

Despite her vow to resist any extension of tenure, Yesufu expressed confidence that Obi would remain true to his word, describing him as a leader who understands the weight of public trust. “We will fight him there [if he changes his mind],” she added, “but I believe he is a man who keeps his word.”
